i registered my puppy for obedience training when she was about 10 weeks old. it was an 8 week course. she just finished with it about a week ago. since then, she’s been more unruly than ever. it’s like she’s being disobedient on purpose. how do i re-establish dominance without ruining our relationship?

she seems to only listen if i’m really aggressive with her (i.e. using a loud and deep tone of voice).

what should i do? i was thinking about re-enrolling her in obedience training. do you think that’s a good idea? she’s almost 5 months now.

For the next two or three months, your dog is going to be a total jerk. :-) She’s a teenager right now, and will be acting like it for a while.

Just be very consistent with what you’ve both learned. If a loud deep voice is what does it, then go with it. Just be consistent and keep at it.

There’s a reason why a lot of dogs up for adoption are about 5-7 months old. It takes emotional stamina to live through this stage.

But it’s worth it!

Actually, dogs respond to the tone of your voice. When I do commands I tell my dogs in a deeper tone of voice than usual, a little sharper, a little louder. Praise is high pitched and squealy. Dog’s communicate in the same way. A low bark and a high bark mean very different things.

Obedience training CAN make your dog less obedient if you’re not consistent. For now, though, she is going to be a little rowdy. It’s just that age, so don’t give up! Persistence and consistency is key!

Take her for walks on the leash then practice what you learned
in obedience school. (Dog should walk at your side or slighly
    behind you.)

Do this every day so that she gets used to the routine and this
will help get rid of all the extra energy and re-establish
    who is the boss.

You didn’t say whether you passed or failed the class. I know when I took my dog, we were tested at the end. Also, what you learn there has to be applied everyday for the rest of the dogs life. They tend to forget if you don’t. As for re-enrolling,you can do that too. I know I took a few extra classes, I didn’t do the whole thing over. My trainer let me do that with no extra charge.

    Good Luck

No, proper obedience training doesn’t make a dog less obedient. Improper obedience training attempts most certainly can. She has learned that you don’t know what you are doing. Basically the overwhelming majority of what is trained in obedience class is training the person to properly interact with and train the dog. Dogs learn very fast and she has learned that you don’t know what you are doing and don’t mean what you say. You don’t need to ‘establish dominance’ - that is the latest bs - basically you either know how to properly interact with and train the dog or you don’t and given her behavior, you don’t. Yes, go back to class and learn how to be consistent and interact properly with her. Don’t make excuses for her like some suggest because of her ‘age’ or some fictitious ’stage’ she is going through - she is being trained to misbehave and blow you off and you need to establish a better relationship with her. Find a good motivational obedience class and continue with her — you don’t learn to be a rocket scientist with one math course in first grade and you don’t learn to train your dog in one puppy obedience class.
